Absecon lsland is on the way to banning those festive but environmentally toxic balloons. Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, and Longport have started to ban the outdoor release of helium-filled balloons. Get caught and it will cost you $500.
City Council of Atlantic City joined their Absecon Island neighbors in balloon ban efforts: reduce trash & protect marine life.
Party balloons or those used to identify Real Estate open houses can sometimes end up blowing away. Memorials or special events using balloon releases have also contributed to the issue.
These latex or mylar balloons ultimately end up on the beach, dunes, or in the ocean. Marine life often mistake the deflated balloons as food. Ingestion causes great distress. This typically ends in death for the turtle, bird or fish. Sea turtles think the floating balloons are jellyfish, which they love to eat. Sea birds get caught up in ribbons and strings.
Helium filled balloons travel long distances and take a long time to degrade.
A Balloon Ban Ordinance for Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate & Longport.
Ban the release of any helium balloons, including latex and Mylar. The release of balloons inflated with lighter-than-air gases poses a danger and nuisance to the environment, particularly to wildlife and marine animals.
A ban on plastic bags or fee to discourage plastic bag use has been tough to enact in most South Jersey towns. So far, Longport is the only one to adopt a mandatory 10-cent fee on plastic bags usage.
