Margate Protests Against Dunes as Ventnor Beach Work Ramps Up

Margate residents will rally against the error prone dune project on Sunday, Aug. 13 at 2pm.

Hundreds of concerned citizens will gather on the beach at Jerome Ave. Plenty of media will be on hand to cover what promises to be a lively and public push-back against the one-size-fits-all dune project.

Margate pumping and dredging is expected to resume by Tuesday night Aug 15. In Ventnor, dune work is now disrupting various beaches from Cornwall to Suffolk.

Margate, as well as Ventnor residents, have either lost total faith in those executing the beach project, or are quickly getting there.

The Army Corps are now following Judge Bumb’s recommendations. They’re completing mitigation efforts that consist of orange fencing around the swampy areas.

While workers finished fencing off ‘the swamp’, light rain brought back pooling to wet basin.

The Army Corp must test for contamination levels in the run-off water that collects in the areas prone to pooling, between the bulkhead and the new dunes.

As part of the ‘fix’, the Army Corp ripped up old dunes in Ventnor in order to use that sand, and fill-in the always moist basins that are just inches above the water table.

Pro-dune advocates warn that Margate and neighboring Ventnor must have bigger and wider dunes / beaches to protect against the “ravages of storms during hurricane season”. This scare tactic is quickly brushed off by those who believe back-bay flooding is the real danger to life & property.

Reports say that approx 90% of Hurricane Sandy insurance claims were due to back bay flooding damage.
